Red Funnel is the original Isle of Wight ferry company that has been operating since 1861. You can either take the Southampton-East Cowes service or the Southampton-West Cowes service, depending on your needs and preferences. The Southampton-East Cowes service is suitable for both vehicle and foot passengers. It takes about 60 minutes to cross the Solent and reach the island. You can enjoy a comfortable and spacious journey with a range of facilities on board, such as cafes, bars, lounges, shops and free Wi-Fi. You can also admire the stunning views of the coastline and the yachts along the way. This service operates year-round with up to 25 sailings per day. The Southampton-West Cowes service is ideal for foot passengers who want a faster and more convenient way to get to the island. It takes only 30 minutes to travel on the high-speed catamarans that whisk you across the water. You can relax in the air-conditioned cabins or on the sun deck and make use of the free Wi-Fi and charging points. You can also access the terminal facilities at both ends of the route, such as toilets, vending machines and ticket offices. This service runs daily with up to 30 sailings per day.

Travelling around the eastern side of the island, with views from the top of Brading Down and travelling past Bembridge Harbour.     Beaches The island has over 57 miles of coastline, which most of it is accessible. In total the island has 17 blue flag beaches which means they are hight standard. The beaches at Ryde, Shanklin and Sandown are sandy with brilliant beachside amenities. The beach at Ventnor is mostly shingle but it still well worth a visit. In the summer these beaches get very busy, so if you are after a more quiet beach trip why not visit the beaches on the western side of the island. These are safe and clean but some are isolated from towns and villages. Which ever beach you chose you are guaranteed a great time.

  • Shanklin Chine

Located in the old village, the chine runs down to the seafront, offering some spectacular views of the Sandown Bay. The chine was formed by the water fall, eroding the cliff behind. The area in the chine is full of spectacular flora and history. The chine was used in WW2 for the PLUTO pipeline which sent fuel to the army on mainland Europe. At the beach end of the chine is a gift shop and café. There is also a exhibit of the history of the chine and the military roles it was used for. New for 2023, a family of dinosaurs have taken over the chine! The summer months is the perfect opportunity to see the chine floodlit!

The trip takes just 20 minutes and runs up to 24 times a day. The Lymington-Yarmouth route is another option for travellers with vehicles or bikes, as it offers easy access to both ends of the island. The voyage takes 40 minutes and runs up to 15 times a day.
