Newport
Newport is the county town of the island, located in the geographical centre of the island. It offers a variety of shopping options, from mainstream chains to local businesses. However, Newport has not always been the administrative and commercial centre of the island. In the past, Carisbrooke was the capital of the island and the seat of power at Carisbrooke Castle. Newport also used to be a major railway junction, connecting different parts of the island by train. However, this ended in the 1950s when most of the railway lines were closed down. Today, one can still see traces of this history in the viaduct that spans over the River Medina.
