The Wildheart Animal Sanctuary

Set along the stunning shoreline of Sandown Bay, The Wildheart Animal Sanctuary is a truly special Isle of Wight attraction—one that combines breathtaking coastal scenery with deeply meaningful conservation work. Home to rescued big cats, bears, primates, and other vulnerable species, the sanctuary offers an inspiring and educational experience where every visit directly supports the animals’ ongoing care.

Situated beside the atmospheric ruins of an old fort overlooking the sea, the sanctuary provides a peaceful, natural setting for the animals who now call it home. Many of its residents—including lions, tigers, lynx, monkeys, and the sanctuary’s newly rescued bears—arrived here after being saved from exploitation, poor living conditions, or the illegal wildlife trade. The arrival of the bears marks a significant new chapter for the sanctuary, offering these intelligent, charismatic animals a safe environment where they can recover, explore, and thrive.

As you wander through the sanctuary, you’ll find thoughtfully designed habitats that prioritise space, enrichment, and wellbeing. Special viewing platforms and walkways allow you to observe the animals comfortably and respectfully—watching big cats stretch lazily in the sun, listening to the playful vocalisations of primates, or seeing the rescue bears forage, roam, and enjoy the naturalistic surroundings of their new home.

Educational talks delivered by passionate keepers take place throughout the day, sharing the stories, personalities, and conservation challenges faced by each animal. These insights help deepen your understanding of the sanctuary’s vital work and highlight the importance of compassion, rescue, and global wildlife protection.

Beyond the animal encounters, the sanctuary offers beautifully tended gardens, peaceful seating areas, and an inviting, family-friendly atmosphere. Interactive displays and child-focused activities help younger visitors connect with the animals’ stories and learn about protecting habitats around the world.

The on-site café serves refreshments with unrivalled views across Sandown Bay, while the gift shop offers ethically sourced, wildlife-themed items—ensuring that every purchase directly supports the sanctuary’s mission.
