IOW Steam Railway

Step back in time on the Isle of Wight Steam Railway, a charming heritage railway that winds through the island’s picturesque countryside. Perfect for families, history enthusiasts, and rail fans, the railway offers a nostalgic journey aboard beautifully restored steam locomotives and vintage carriages, capturing the romance of travel from a bygone era.

The line stretches for several miles, connecting Smallbrook Junction to Wootton Station, passing through rolling fields, woodland, and quaint villages along the way. Passengers can enjoy scenic vistas from period carriages, watch the steam and smoke curl into the sky, and experience the sights and sounds of a classic railway in action.

At the heart of the railway is Havenstreet Station, the hub of activity and the main base for the line. This beautifully preserved station offers visitors a step into the golden age of rail travel, complete with a vintage signal box, historic station buildings, and traditional platforms. Here, you can explore the museum displays and interactive exhibits, showcasing the Isle of Wight’s railway history, including restored carriages, memorabilia, and engineering artefacts. The workshops at Havenstreet allow visitors to watch skilled volunteers maintain and restore the locomotives, providing a fascinating behind-the-scenes glimpse of steam railway operations.

Families will find plenty to enjoy at Havenstreet, with a cafeteria, gift shop, and picnic areas, as well as hands-on activities and seasonal events. Special themed train rides—from Santa Specials to Murder Mystery trains—bring extra excitement to every visit, ensuring there’s always something new to experience.
