La géologie de l'île est la principale raison des découvertes de fossiles. La côte de Sandown à West Wight est constituée d'argile molle, qui préserve les fossiles, mais provoque également une grave érosion qui expose les fossiles. Le dinosaure le plus commun à trouver sur l'île est l'Iguanodon. Vous pouvez même voir les empreintes de pas à Compton à marée basse.
