A perfect two-day itinerary for a refreshing island escape
🛳️ Getting There
You can arrive via:
Car ferry (from Southampton, Portsmouth, or Lymington to East Cowes, Fishbourne, or Yarmouth)
Passenger ferry or hovercraft (to Cowes or Ryde)
Once on the island, having a car (or hiring one) is ideal for exploring, but buses and walking routes are good too.
🗓️ Day One: The West and South Coast
9:00 AM – Breakfast in Freshwater Bay
Start with a hearty breakfast at Dimbola Tea Room, once the home of Victorian photographer Julia Margaret Cameron. Enjoy coffee with sea views.
10:00 AM – Walk Tennyson Down to The Needles
A stunning 3-mile coastal walk leads to The Needles — iconic chalk stacks with historic viewpoints at the Old Battery. The views are unforgettable.
Optional detour: Ride the chairlift down to Alum Bay and fill your own sand souvenir.
1:00 PM – Lunch at The Waterfront, Totland Bay
Enjoy lunch by the sea with local fish and chips or a fresh crab sandwich. Ideal for a relaxed pause.
2:30 PM – Visit Tapnell Farm or The Isle of Wight Reptilarium
Families: Try Tapnell Farm Park — animals, go-karts, and soft play.
Couples or nature lovers: Visit the Reptilarium at Fort Victoria for something quirky and educational.
4:00 PM – Explore Ventnor and the Botanic Garden
Head to the south coast for an afternoon stroll in Ventnor Botanic Garden, famous for its subtropical microclimate and unique plants.
6:30 PM – Dinner in Ventnor
Try The Spyglass Inn for live music, sea views, and hearty food, or The Bistro for something more refined.
8:30 PM – Sunset at St. Catherine’s Lighthouse
Drive or walk to the southern tip for a peaceful end to your day as the sun sets behind the dramatic lighthouse cliffs.
🗓️ Day Two: The East and Central Isle
9:00 AM – Breakfast in Ryde
Start with breakfast at Chocolate Apothecary or No. 64 – both popular local spots for coffee and pastries.
10:00 AM – Stroll the Esplanade or Explore Appley Beach
Ryde’s long sandy beach is perfect for a morning walk. Let your feet paddle in the sea or wander through Appley Park by the tower.
11:00 AM – Visit Bembridge Windmill & Village
Discover the island’s only remaining windmill, then browse independent shops in Bembridge and take in coastal views.
1:00 PM – Lunch at The Crab & Lobster Inn (Bembridge)
Sit outside if it’s sunny and enjoy fresh seafood right by the water.
2:30 PM – Carisbrooke Castle
Head inland to explore this beautifully preserved Norman castle. Walk the walls, see the donkeys work the treadmill, and learn about King Charles I’s imprisonment.
4:30 PM – Afternoon Tea or Gelato in Godshill
This postcard-perfect village has thatched cottages, tearooms, and artisan shops. Try the Old World Tea Rooms or Crave Ice Cream.
6:00 PM – Final Walk: Shanklin Chine or Luccombe Cliffs
End with a walk through Shanklin Chine, a magical gorge lit by fairy lights in the evening (seasonal), or enjoy clifftop views from Luccombe.
7:30 PM – Dinner Before Departure
Dine at The Steamer Inn (Shanklin seafront) or The Coast Bar & Dining Room (Cowes) if you’re heading north to catch a ferry.
🧳 Before You Go:
Stop by a local shop for Isle of Wight Garlic, The Rock Shop Sandown, or Godshill Cider.
Check ferry timetables to avoid the rush.
